DAY 3, 4: THE NEW HOCHIMINH TRAIL - PHONG NHA - KE BANG

Phong Nha - Ke Bang is a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is noted for its cave and grotto systems as it is composed of 300 caves and grottos. A 2009 survey brought the total discovered length of the cave system to about 126 km, with many areas still not well explored. The Son Doong Cave, which was discovered in the 2009 survey by British and Vietnamese explorers, is considered the largest cave in the world. Even before this discovery, Phong Nha held several world cave records, including the longest river as well as the largest combined caverns and passageways.

As you explore the Phong Nha Ke Bang area, you’ll notice a high number of war memorials. Even more than you might see elsewhere in Vietnam. These are the reminders of the area’s key part in the wartime Ho Chi Minh Trail - it is considered one of the extraordinary logistical feats of the Vietnam war. It consisted of thousands of kilometres of tracks rather than a single road and ran from North Vietnam into Laos and Cambodia before looping back into what was South Vietnam.

DAY 5: KHE SANH - DMZ - THE OLD BATTLEFIELDS

Khe Sanh was an area of Bru Montagnard villages and coffee plantations, situated about 11 km from the Laotian frontier on Route 9, the northernmost transverse road in South Vietnam. The origin of the combat base lay in the construction by the US Marine of an airfield in August 1962 outside the local village at an old French fort.

In the US, the media following the battle drew comparisons with the 1954 Battle of Dien Bien Phu, which proved disastrous for the French. Nevertheless, President Johnson was "determined that Khe Sanh would not be an 'American Dien Bien Phu'". He subsequently ordered the US military to hold Khe Sanh at all costs. As a result, "B-52 Arc Light strikes originating in Guam, Okinawa, and Thailand bombed the jungles surrounding Khe Sanh into stubble fields" and Khe Sanh became the major news headline coming out to the whole world in late March 1968.

DMZ, which means demilitarized zone, is a military term that refers to a combat-free area between two enemies. The DMZ in Vietnam lay near the 17th parallel and was created by an agreement known as the Geneva Accords. The boundary between North Vietnam (officially the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam) and South Vietnam (officially the Republic of Vietnam) was established as the Ben Hai River. The river ran approximately east-west, approximately on the 17th parallel. The DMZ extended five kilometers on each side of the river.

DAY 6: HUE - 180 km

The Battle of Hue – Tet Offensive 1968 – was one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War. Hue was the ancient imperial capital city of Vietnam – about a hundred kilometers south of the DMZ. At that time, it had a population of nearly 140,000, making it the third largest city in the Republic of South Vietnam. The Citadel, or Imperial City, is the walled in portion of Hue sitting on the north bank of the Perfume River.

Deep beneath the dark earth, hidden from screeching bombers and harbouring desperate soldiers, the people of Vinh Linh, Quang Tri lived for many years in the now famous Vinh Moc Tunnel. They survived, and even prospered in their makeshift underground community. During that time, 17 children were born in the tunnels, each of whose lives is a testament to just how perfect the complex network of caves and warrens were at protecting those forces within. As time goes by, it has become both a historical evidence and a tourist destination for discovering a heroic period of Vietnam’s history.

DAY 7: HOIAN - 130 km

The Guardian - UK magazine, has listed Hai Van (Sea Cloud) Pass in Vietnam among the top 10 great scenic motorcycling roads in the world. The magazine also quotes praises from the former Top Gear host, Jeremy Clarkson. As he puts it, the road is, “a deserted ribbon of perfection – one of the best coast roads in the world.”

The most spectacular section spans 21 kilometers and comprises a series of hairpin turns, steep inclines and breathtaking vistas. Reaching a peak elevation of 496 meters, Hai Van Pass is often shrouded in a mist that rises from the sea. At the top of the pass, visitors stand in awe of the amazing and beautiful views.

Rounding out the list of top 10 are Carretera de Sa Calobra of Mallorca, Irohazaka Roads of Japan, The Old Strynefjell Mountain Road of Norway, Grimsel Pass of Switzerland, Serra do Rio do Rastro Road of Brazil, Rim Rock Drive of the US, Skeleton coast of Namibia, The Loneliest Road of the US, and Road to the Isles of Scotland.
